Comments from Brian Holtsbaum

Hi Richard,

In our attempts to simplify CP we sometimes forget the details. Researching the criteria, we find it was developed to achieve an acceptable corrosion rate which was <1 mil/yr. ISO has now included this fact in their document. NACE would not be serving industry and future generations if we led them to believe that the criteria would always reduce corrosion to 0 mils/yr even though in many cases this occurs.

As you indicated a polarized potential is not measured unless all current sources are interrupted. An “instant off” potential can be recorded by a datalogger plot if a manual reading is in doubt. There is some exceptional technology available to us today.

Sorry to miss everyone at the conference this year but have a good one.

Thanks,

Brian
